XY coordinates, 2 axis motion?

We started out discussing different ways of configuring the CNC machine and create a 2 axis motion with two actuators, and initially decided that we want to use one of the following methods, because we want the motors to be placed on the frame and not the moving platform, as well as on the same side and not on top of each other.

H-bot

H-bot
Advantages

  • Needs only one belt
  • Simple one-plane configuration

Disadvantages

  • Creates a torque around the center of mass, which might reduce precision if the structure isn’t rigid enough.

T-bot

T-bot
Advantages

  • Needs only one belt.
  • Simple configuration.
  • Moves along two axes.

Disadvantages

  • The configuration itself (the T) takes up a lot of space.
  • Creates a torque around the center of mass.

 

Core XY

Advantages

  • Simple configuration.
  • More precise movement, limits the torque with less strict tolerances.

Disadvantages

  • The belts needs to cross each other, which results in a necessary displacement.
